“With GG22, we're back to the OSS rounds, back to the original intents of funding open source software and public goods. Our commitment to funding meaningful work remains strong, and we’re thankful to have realigned with our founding vision of backing open-source software and digital public goods.” - Sov, Head of Grants at Gitcoin
Gitcoin Grants has run quarterly grant rounds starting in 2019, funding over 6000 projects and allocating a total of over $63.9M in public goods funding. Many well-known, used, and loved projects, initiatives, and organizations in web3 got their start from Gitcoin Grants rounds and have taken off since. Just a few of these groundbreaking projects and incredible stories can be found on our blog.
MathildaDV, Grants Program Lead at Gitcoin, said it best:
"The goal of GG22 is to empower and support builders across the Ethereum ecosystem with more resources, education, and seamless multi-chain accessibility to empower the growth of web3 and public goods."
GG22 is the last round of 2024, running from October 23 to November 6. The round focuses on scaling open-source software (OSS) and supporting digital public goods with $1M in matching funds across 4 OSS rounds and $125K in matching funds allocated to 7 Community Rounds. There are two key new features to explore, Mint Attestations and Quick Bridge, which enhance accessibility, streamline donations, and are meant to enable future rewards for donors.
The round, as previous rounds, leverages Quadratic Funding (QF) to distribute funds based on community support, amplifying even the smallest donations. In the words of Vitalik Buterin, “Gitcoin grants quadratic funding is not just for funds allocation, it’s also a great signaling tool!”
GG22 introduces exciting features like cross-chain donations and proof of donations, making the donation process smoother and more accessible to new users. These updates allow donors to contribute across different blockchain networks and build a verifiable donation record on-chain. This not only simplifies donating but also enhances rewards for more seasoned donors, creating more engaging incentives for continued participation in GG rounds.
In GG22, donors can now mint attestations—onchain proofs of their donations.
More information on mint attestations is coming next week.
GG22 introduces a Quick Bridge feature that allows donors to contribute across multiple chains without holding the exact token required for the project they support. A swap checkout widget streamlines this process, allowing donors to quickly swap tokens as they donate, enhancing the user experience.
Continuing the commitment to fairness, GG22 leverages the Sybil resistance strategy from GG20. This includes Connection-Oriented Cluster Matching (COCM) and Model-Based Detection via Passport. These measures significantly reduce the influence of fake accounts, ensuring matching funds go to deserving, community-supported projects. While not all participants will require a passport, on-chain activity across major blockchains (Ethereum, Optimism, zkSync, etc.) will be analyzed to verify donors’ authenticity. The Passport XYZ Model Based Detection score tracks on-chain activity, like Ethereum or NFT usage, to help verify donor legitimacy. While this score is only accessible via API, you can view related information through Stamps within the Passport app, which are based on activity. For example, Stamps like Ethereum Activity, NFT Activity, and zkSync Activity reflect the interactions a user has on these blockchains.
More information on COCM is coming in our blog post onthe 17.10.24.
For the first time, a community-led onboarding program was launched, funded by the Citizen Grants Program, and workshops were introduced to support Community Round operators in setting up their rounds for success.
OSS remains at the heart of Gitcoin, and GG22 dedicates $1M across four OSS rounds. Gitcoin's OSS Program is managed and run by the Gitcoin Grants team and funded through Gitcoin's matching pool.
"We believe Crypto marks a natural progression of the open-source software (OSS) movement, embracing its principles of collaboration, transparency, and decentralization. It is on this foundation that Gitcoin Grants started. We believe in ensuring that the majority of funds that the community has entrusted us to steward should go towards the core principles that got us here in the first place." - Sov, Head of Grants at Gitcoin
