GG23 Round Overview

Gitcoin Grants Round 23 is introducing a multi-mechanism funding structure designed to support builders at every stage of their journey. In addition to the established Open Source Software (OSS) Program, GG23 has 10 community rounds, each utilizing funding mechanisms tailored to uplift and support their specific communities.
Introduction
GG23 is a multi-mechanism grants program supporting builders at all stages of growth. Applications for Quadratic Funding and Retro Funding run from March 17-31, with Quadratic Funding round donations open from April 2-16 and Retro round voting from April 9-23. While staying true to our core mission of funding Open Source Software (OSS), GG23 expands participation through Community Rounds—decentralized, community-led rounds that run alongside our OSS Program, empowering ecosystems to fund what matters most to them.
GG23 is a multi-mechanism program, supporting builders through three distinct rounds running simultaneously: 1) Open Source Software (OSS), 2) Community Rounds, and 3) Retro Funding. While we remain committed to OSS as our core mission, we are expanding Community Rounds to provide targeted funding for specific communities driving impact in Web3. This ensures broader access to funding while reinforcing our commitment to open-source innovation.
A staged approach ensures that early-stage builders gain visibility and support through QF, while high-impact projects receive funding through the Retro Funding round that reflects their contributions. Below are some dates to keep in mind:
- Applications (QF & Retro Funding): March 17 - 31
- Quadratic Funding Donations: April 2 - 16
- Retro Round Voting: April 9 - 23

Retro Funding Round
The Retro Funding Round rewards proven, high-impact projects that have consistently contributed to the Gitcoin ecosystem. Built in response to builder feedback, it provides meaningful support to mature projects based on measurable impact, ensuring they receive the funding they deserve.
This round is curated with 30 top builders from past Gitcoin OSS Rounds based on their participation, Elo rating, and recent activity. Each qualifying project is guaranteed a minimum of $10K in funding and will be contacted directly by the Gitcoin team. Participation is optional—builders can choose to opt into the Retro Round or apply for a QF round, and may only participate in one round. We announced the Top 30 Mature Builders selected for the Retro Round, read more about it in this blog post!
"The Gitcoin Grants support a diverse spectrum of OSS projects at various stages of their lifecycle, each with unique characteristics. By leveraging data-driven grant design, we have begun an iterative process to move beyond a one-size-fits-all funding approach to better meet the distinct needs of different project cohorts." - Rohit Malekar, Open Source Observer.
Community Rounds
Community Rounds are at the core of decentralizing funding and empowering communities to directly support the projects in the wider Ethereum ecosystem.
